Papa

Today my grandfather died. Everyone called him Bill, I called him Papa. It's French for dad. I've always called him that. William Giguere is a father to three great people. One of whom is my mom. My grandmother survives him and I have called her Pumpkin ever since I was a child. I can't stand seeing my mom and Pumpkin cry.

Those of you who know me know that I'm passionate about gadgets and how things work. My earliest gadget related memory was my grandfather explaining how a power line transformer works. He showed me a volt meter and explained electricity. I was a child so the explanation was obviously dumbed down a little so I could understand it. He used to work for Dover repairing elevators and I remember him showing me the top of an elevator once. I really think that contributed a great deal to my personality and ignited a thirst for knowledge about how the world works around me.

Some of the things I will remember always:
Summers in the pool
His workbench in the house on Featherstone
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc tape
Chinese food dinners growing up
The plastic Santa suit
Cold mugs of beer when he visited
Him mowing the lawn with the green Lawnboy
His contributions to my pin collection
His perpetual smile
The ease with which he laughed
The jokes

Papa you will be sorely missed by us all.

Dumpster diving

Yeah... I'm dumpster diving. They throw out so much good lumber that it brings tears to my eyes. Anyways, I went and asked the foreman how he felt about me scavenging from the site dumpster. He said it was fine. Apparently they like when people do that because it reduces how may times they need to empty it.

Anyways, I put it to good use.

Built this for ten dollars. Had to buy screws. All that is left to do is get some MDF cut at Home Depot for the work surface. I think I will pilfer more for a workbench in the garage and shelves for the laundry room.

I then spent the rest of the evening fishing for compliments on my manliness... I think the compliments I got were just to get me to shut up...

Hot day

It was a hot day today. But I got a lot done.

Late...

It's one forty five AM and there is actually someone on my street hammering away in their garage. Perhaps it's a case of booze motivated building. Most likely moronitis. I'm off to bed.

Butt Plugs

I don't think I'll ever fly again. I don't use butt plugs... when flying... But it seems they will be checking for them regardless...

Web2DNA

The web2dna site analyzes websites and creates a human DNA profile based on directory structure and blah blah blah. You can choose the background colour! Digg.com found this interesting tidbit for me.

Emosean

This is the whiteboard in my cubicle at work. We call it the Emosean (Emotion) board. Curtis updates it daily based on my mood and state of mind. Monday is a holiday in Canada but not in the US. The majority of our clients are from the States. So we will be on holiday staff Monday, meaning just me for end user support. Curtis was kind enough to draw what I will look like at the end of the day Monday after the entirety of the US shits on my head for having to wait so long. I said "Curtis, draw me like my face was caved in"... He drew this... When I turned around and saw this I laughed my ass off and I had a customer on the phone. I wish I could draw.

Lawn

We got our lawn installed almost two weeks ago... I was waiting to post because apparently they do the driveway soon after the grass goes in. They haven't done it yet. However they are also putting up our "privacy fences" so I hope to have photos of our finally completed house soon. I got bored of taking the weekly photo because since we moved in there has been next to no change to the exterior. So. I will soon have the final photo. I think I might make some kind of lame-ass flash time-lapse video to show the house go up. Yeah, I know I've been obsessed with the house... But it's a twenty year investment and it's a HUGE part of my life with Christine.

Construction on our street continues and I really think I will miss the sound of construction in the morning when they are done. A part of me sometimes wants to walk over to the site and ask if I can help. I've always been fascinated by construction in it's many varied forms. I just never got in to it aside from DIY projects with my dad. Which was/is always fun.

Aside from that work is busy. I've completed a two part networking fundamentals training presentation for my department. My boss just needs to approve it and then somehow find time in our incessantly busy day for me to train people in one hour chunks. I cover everything from the media used through to NAT transversal techniques in an effort to assist our team when troubleshooting VoIP setups with our phone system. I've also become the assistant network admin and backup admin for our web server. Woot. Hopefully I get a gigantic raise on my one year anniversary! Keep your fingers crossed for me!
